Each book has a shelfmark, which is a combination of letters and numbers. Break this down into sections to make it easier to find the book you are looking for. For example:
Still confused? Don't worry, just ask at one of the Enquiry Desks if you can't find what you are looking for - don't forget we are here to help!
Most Archaeology books are shelved in the CC section on Floor 1 of The McClay Library. The majority of Geography books are shelved in the G-GF section on Floor 1 and most of the Geology and Palaeoecology books are shelved in the QE section on Floor 3.
QCat Library Catalogue (on the Library homepage) will give you the full shelfmark of a particular book. You can search for keywords in the book title and/or author's surname. You can also search for a topic you are interested in to see what books we have on that subject.
Short Loan Books
Reading List books in heavy demand are kept in the Short Loan Collection which is located on the ground floor next to the Borrower Services Desk.
Reference books (eg encyclopaedias and handbooks) can be found at the start of the book sequence on each floor.
Many books of Irish interest can be found in Special Collections on Floor 1.
If you are having problems getting hold of the books on your Reading Lists or if you think there aren't enough copies of a particular title, please let me know. I can buy additional copies or transfer books to Short Loan if appropriate.
Drop me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org and I will do my best to help.
If you want to see what academic books are available in other libraries, you can search Copac. Copac is the combined catalogue of major UK and Irish libraries, including the British Library, university libraries and specialist research libraries. Academic staff and Research Postgraduate students can apply for books not held by Queen's through the Inter-Library Loan scheme.
