Some Common Metrics

This page tells you how to find some common research metrics (measures of research impact). Other metrics are available: for more information, please visit the Library Open Access Team's SciVal guide.

Journal Impact Factor

Number of times articles in a journal have been cited, divided by number of articles in the journal in the last 2 years.

Using Journal Citation Reports (JCR) via Web of Science

  1. Go to www.qub.ac.uk/lib
  2. Click Databases A-Z
  3. Click W
  4. Click Web of Science
  5. If prompted, log in with QUB details
  6. Click Journal Citation Reports
  7. If JCR doesn't open immediately, click Continue
  8. Under Go to Journal Profile, search for journal and pick it from list
  9. Journal profile will display, listing key impact indicators. 2nd column of data displays Journal Impact Factor

Researcher h-Index

= number of papers by an author, each of which has been cited at least times.

Using Scopus

  1. Go to www.qub.ac.uk/lib
  2. Click Databases A-Z
  3. Click S
  4. Click Scopus
  5. If prompted, log in with QUB details
  6. Beside Documents, click Authors
  7. Search for researcher, including their affiliated institution if possible
  8. Researchers who potentially match your search are displayed - click on relevant researcher's name
  9. Researcher's Scopus profile will open - their h-index displays in the top right corner

 

Journal SNIP Factor

SNIP = Source Normalized Impact per Paper.

Using Scopus

  1. Go to www.qub.ac.uk/lib
  2. Click Databases A-Z
  3. Click S
  4. Click Scopus
  5. If prompted, log in with QUB details
  6. Click Compare sources > in top right of screen
  7. Choose SNIP, and search for journal - its SNIP factor will be displayed (if it has one)

Alternatively in Scopus, do a topic or article search, and click on a journal title in the Source column of the article details – journal SNIP factor appears on right.

Article Altmetrics

Non-traditional impact measures such as social media mentions.

Using Dimensions

  1. Go to Dimensions
  2. Search for a topic, or a specific article
  3. If an article has altmetric data, click on the Altmetric button to view it

Using Scopus

  1. Go to www.qub.ac.uk/lib
  2. Click Databases A-Z
  3. Click S
  4. Click Scopus
  5. If prompted, log in with QUB details
  6. Search for a topic, or a specific article
  7. Click the article title to view its full Scopus record
  8. Click PlumX Metrics button to view social media mentions, Mendeley uploads etc
