Mathematics & Physics: Books

Library support for the School of Mathematics & Physics

Where to Find Print Books in the Library

Most print Maths and Physics books are shelved on Floor 3 of The McClay Library (Maths at QA, Astronomy at QB and Physics at QC).

QCat Library Catalogue (on the Library homepage) will give you the full shelfmark of a particular book. You can search for keywords in the book title and/or the author's surname. You can also search for a topic you are interested in to see what books we have on that subject.

Short Loan Books

Reading List books in heavy demand are kept in the Short Loan Collection which is located on the ground floor next to the Borrower Services Desk.

Understanding Shelfmarks

Each book has a shelfmark, which is a combination of letters and numbers. Break this down into sections to make it easier to find the book you are looking for. For example:

Still confused? Don't worry, just ask at one of the Enquiry Desks if you can't find what you are looking for - don't forget we are here to help!

You also have access to a large number of e-books via QCat Library Catalogue. For more information, see the E-books LibGuide.

Books in Other Libraries

If you want to see what academic books are available in other libraries, you can search Copac. Copac is the combined catalogue of major UK and Irish libraries, including the British Library, university libraries and specialist research libraries. Academic staff and Research Postgraduate students can apply for books not held by Queen's through the Inter-Library Loan scheme.
