Persistent Identifiers: ORCiD

What is ORCiD

  • A unique identifier – a kind of barcode – that can link an individual researcher to grants, projects and publications
  • It is comprised of 16 digits and is assigned by the ORCiD Registry
  • It eliminates name ambiguity and ensures correct attribution. This is especially important if you have a common surname, if your name has changed, or if you have published under variants of your name
  • Ultimately an ORCiD iD ensures that your research, scholarship and research-related activities are properly attributed to you
  • You should routinely update your ORCiD iD with your activities and publications. ORCiD only is as effective when you update it regularly, treating it like a CV
  • It is possible to set up updates to ORCiD via Pure, or to update directly in ORCiD and push this through to Pure.

Why sign up to ORCiD?

As a researcher, your name is probably not unique and you may find that your academic outputs get confused with those by someone with a similar name. You may have publications that use different variants of your name throughout your career.

  • As a result of using an ORCiD iD, work is discoverable and connected to the author throughout their academic career. Even if you change research discipline or name!
  • It minimises the amount of time spent on repetitive data entry
  • It also leads to more effective reporting and sharing of research, which will impact both an individual researcher’s profile, as well as one’s university profile

Who requires and ORCiD iD?

  • Certain funders require ORCiD iD: Wellcome Trust, National Institute for Health Research, RLUK
  • Certain publishers also require ORCiD iD: Royal Society, PLOS, eLife, IEEE, Science Journals, Frontiers, Wiley, Springer Nature, Society of Open Science, American Chemical Society, Royal Society of Chemistry
  • It is recommended that all researchers – whatever stage you are at in your career – should sign up for an ORCiD iD. It is good practice and an ORCiD iD enables ease of interoperability between publisher, funder and research information systems.
  • It is anticipated that ORCiD iD will be required increasingly more and more in the immediate future

ORCiD and Pure

Pure integrates ORCiD iDs to enable researchers to push and pull publications and award data between ORCiD and Pure.

Once you have signed up to ORCiD, you can add your research outputs against your new ORCiD iD. This can be done in a number of ways:

  • Manually

  • Searching and linking to content in various databases

  • Adding DOI

  • Adding ID (ArXiv or PubMed)

If you wish to bulk import research outputs from ORCiD into Pure, you need to ensure that you have signed up to ORCiD first. Then, you can import into Pure using the methods below:

  • Login to Pure

  • Select Add new (green button) on top right-hand corner of the page of your personal account in Pure

  • Underneath research output on left-hand side, select Import from online source

  • Select ORCiD

  • Select relevant outputs to import. Select Import

  • Ensure that all internal authors are matched to the correct member of staff

  • Select Import and save

  • Quickly check that all mandatory fields – those marked with a red * - are completed

  • Add any additional information to the record such as DOIs or web links

  • Select save

When you have your ORCID iD, use it when applying for funding and in your manuscript submissions.

ORCiD and other IDs

ORCID is a hub connecting the research landscape.

Researchers may very often have a number of research IDs.

It is a good idea to connect your ORCiD iD to any other research identifiers you may have.

This may include Scopus Author ID and Europe PubMed Central ID. These should be connected with ORCiD iD.

Please consult the following guidance on how to connect your ORCID iD to other identifiers:
