FAIR data: An introduction to research data management for staff (Staff)

  • This training course is aimed at academic staff, including career researchers & Post-Docs
  • This is for all those researchers who would like to develop their understanding of research data
  • This is bitesize course and will provide a brief synopsis of research data management and the support services we offer within the RDM team at Queen's
  • This course will provide information on active data storage, data management plans (DMPs), sensitive data, datasets and the sharing of your data at the end of your project/publication of research
  • It will provide information and resources that will support you regarding the management of your data throughout the research lifecycle
  • This training is a must if you are new to research data management and wish to learn about this fast evolving area
  • Why should you attend? Most funding bids will require a DMP. Funders will also require that you share your data and make it FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable & Reusable). Need to know where you want to save your active data? Do you have sensitive data? This course will provide you with the information to assist  with these questions

Finding research data

Finding research data (PGR & Post-Doc)

New course!!! Do you want to find datasets in relation to your research area? Do you where to find them? Will you generate data as a result of your research? Do you wish to share your data? Are you planning to get published? And do you need to know how to share your data? Sharing your data will increase citation, impact and may be a funder or publisher requirement. Do you know how to go about sharing your data? Where? Which repository do you plan to use? Where to begin with all of this?

  • This training course is aimed at Postgraduate Research students, but also early career researchers and staff
  • Post-docs very welcome to attend this event!
  • This is for all those PGR and Post-Doc researchers who would like to develop their understanding of (i) how to be able to find research data & (ii) to be able to share their research data which they have generated.
  • It will provide a relevant overview of data repositories and aims to make this area less daunting for you

Share your research data and graduate: A workshop using Pure (PGR)

  • This course is intended for final year PGR students and those about to submit their electronic thesis for graduation

  • This course is for those who wish to find out more if they have data connected to their thesis and why and how can they share this data with others using Pure

  • Pure is the system that is used to upload and make visible online your research articles, note any prizes you have won, record any prestigious activities and upload your datasets and electronic thesis

  • Every PGR student has a profile in Pure. This expires when you complete your studies

  • This course is only offered once in semester 1, 2024

  • It is delivered online

This course is aimed primarily at final year PGR students.  

If you are in the final year of your PhD or PGR study, it is strongly advised that you attend this class as soon as possible.

Declare it, prepare it, share it! Sharing your research data the right way (PGR)

Wed 24 April, 2024: 11:00AM-12:30 BST (ONLINE)

This is a brand NEW course. It is intended for PGR students at any stage of their study. It will be delivered online.   

Did you know that when you share your research data you increase your citation, your visibility, and the impact of your research? It can also lead to collaboration opportunities and your research can find itself in new contexts. Good things come from sharing your data. Note also that certain funders which insist that you must share your data.  

But what constitutes your research data? Where can you share it? How do you share it? Is it sensitive? Will it require access controls when sharing? Where is the optimal place to share this data? 

  • This is for all those PGR who would like to develop their understanding of how to be able to share their research data which they have generated. 

  • It will provide a relevant overview of data repositories and aims to make this area less daunting for you 

  • This training will cover informed consent, metadata and documentation of your research data, selecting the right repository to share your data and selecting the right access for your data 

  • Sign up. Remember, declare it (identify what's your data), prepare it (correct file formats and associated documentation) and share it (the right repository for you).

Let's get persistent with your research

Let's get persistent with your research (Staff)

Thu 16 May, 2024: 17:00-18:00 BST (ONLINE)

This is a brand new course

  • This training course is aimed at academic staff, including career researchers & Post-Docs
  • This is for all those researchers who would like to develop their understanding of (i) which persistent identifiers they need to use for their research & (ii) how to go about setting up these identifiers 
  • Identifiers like DOIs are important for published outputs, including research data. The inclusion of a DOI will often be a funder or publisher requirement. But how does one go about acquiring one? How can I get a DOI for my data?
  • This class will provide information on the purpose of these identifiers and where to register for them
  • The class will also supply information on personal identifiers for researchers (ORCiD iD) and why it is imperative that you have an ORCiD iD
  • ORCiD is required for funding bids, submission of research to publishers and to help differentiate you from other researchers. This class will provide information and context about using ORCiD
  • There is also the opportunity for a one-to-one follow-up immediately after the class online to answer bespoke queries. If you wish to avail of this booking, please note it in the booking form.

Research data and your thesis: All that you need to know! (PGR)

  • This is a brand NEW course. It is intended for PGR students at any stage of their study
  • It will explain the concept of research data, defining what is meant by data. Research data usually associated with quantitative data e.g. tables, charts, figures, stats, numbers, especially large sets of metrics/numbers. But research data can be qualitative too, such as reflective diaries, photos, text, interview transcripts, focus groups, digital data etc. 
  • Did you know that when you share your research data you increase your citation, your visibility, and the impact of your research? It can also lead to collaboration opportunities and your research can find itself in new contexts
  • Good things come from sharing your data. Note also that certain funders which insist that you must share your data

This is an essential course if you want to discover what your “research data” is from your thesis and how to share it. If you plan to share your data, what can be shared? What is the best repository to use to share this data? Should you embargo your data, redact it, impose access controls on your data?

The research data escape room: A puzzle games event (PGR)

  • Welcome to this brand new event. This is a fun game to learn all about Research Data Management.
  • It is based on escape room style of game. If you like puzzles and escape rooms, this event is for you!
  • Research Data Management (RDM) refers to a set of practices to ensure responsible handling of data in research. It is important before, during, and after your research.
  • Part of good RDM is writing a Data Management Plan (DMP) to record decisions about how you are going to manage your data.
  • In this class you will learn about persistent identifiers, Data Management Plans, DOIs and good naming file naming convention for your research.
