Pharmacy: Finding Library Resources

Library Search Box Image

Library Search is used for finding resources such as books, journals, and articles held by the Library, as well as many open access publications.

Alert  General Tips:

  • Start by entering keywords that describe your topic, or a title of a specific book or journal.  You can also search by author name.

  • You can use quotation marks around two or more words to search for specific phrases (e.g. "renal drug handbook" to find that specific book title).  You can also use an asterisk (*) to truncate words (e.g. metabol* will find metabolism, metabolite, metabolic).

  • Library Search may return many results, so use the facets on the left-hand side to refine your results —for instance, selecting Resource Type: Articles will limit results to journal articles on your topic.  You can also use the publication date facet to limit results to a specific date range.

Below are guides for finding and accessing different resource types using Library Search.

To find books using Library Search, enter your keywords — this might be a title, an author, or a topic. In this example, we are looking for the book Renal Drug Handbook — this title can be entered within quotation marks.

Library search for books

Your search results will open in a new tab - click on the yellow Sign In link and enter your QUB username (e.g. 1234567@ads.qub.ac.uk) followed by your password. You will then have seamless access to any electronic resources such as e-books:

Library Search sign in screen

Next, use the Resource Type facet on the left to limit to just books. Other options here include:

  • Sort by: sort the order in which the results are arranged, e.g. author or date-newest
  • Availability: choose from either online or print results i.e. available online or held in the library
  • Publication Date:select a publication date range if required
  • Physical Collections: narrow your search to a specific library

Resource type limit

Your results list will now only show books - these results are displayed in order of relevance to the search terms entered. E-books in your results will display an Available Online link:

Example of e-book link

This will give you a link to the e-book platform where the e-book is hosted:

E-book central link example

Clicking on this link will open the selected e-book in a new tab - generally, clicking the Read Online option is the quickest and easiest option to view the e-book:

For further information, please visit the e-books LibGuide.

For print books, Library Search displays Available at underneath the result - click on the location link:

Example of print book location information

This will display the libraries in which a print copy of the book is held. Available means that is is currently on the shelf, and the shelfmark (location in the library) will also be displayed. If the item is on loan, you can request the book.

To find articles on a topic, held by the Library, firstly enter your keywords. You can combine related keywords within brackets using OR, phrases can be entered in quotation marks, and keywords can be truncated using an asterisk (e.g. interact* would find interact, interacts, interaction, interactivity).

In this example we are looking for articles which discuss the interaction between warfarin and vitamin K intake. The following search strategy could be used:

interact* (warfarin OR jantoven) "vitamin k"

Library search results for journal articles

Your results will then appear in a new tab - click on the yellow Sign In link and enter your QUB username (e.g. 1234567@ads.qub.ac.uk) followed by your password. You will then have seamless access to any electronic resources:

The Library provides a wide selection of pharmacy-related journals. Regular access keeps you up-to-date with research and clinical guidelines.

To use Library Search to find journal titles (i.e. the available content of a specific journal) there are two options:

1. Run a keyword search (e.g. title of journal, topic) in Library Search and limit to journals using the Resource Type facet on the left hand side of the page:

Limit to journal resource type

By applying the Journal resource type, all journals which match your keywords will be displayed, whether in print or electronic format - e-journals will display an Available Online link which will direct you to the full-text journal content, while print journals will display a library location and shelfmark, which you can use to locate the journal:

Example of journal titles

2. To find e-journals only - use Journals A - Z.  You can access the Journals A to Z via the Quick Links banner on the Library homepage:

Jounals A to Z link

Next, type in a title keyword (e.g. the pharmaceutical journal) and matching e-journal titles will be displayed - the Available Online link will direct you to the full-text journal content:

Alternatively, you can browse a list of relevant journals by using the Journals by Category list on the left hand side of the screen.  A list of pharmacy-related journals can be accessed via Health & Biological Sciences > Medicine > Pharmacy , Therapeutics, & Pharmacology.

Journals by category

From this category list, you can access any of the e-journal titles by clicking on the Available Online link:

Example e-journal

Next, choose a link under Full Text Availability - this will direct you to the platform where the journal is hosted:

Full Text Availability

You will then be able to view the journal's content - this is usually arranged in volume/issue sequence.  You will also be able to search across the journal.  Some journals also allow email alerts for new articles:

Once you have found a relevant article, click on the PDF link to access the full text paper- please note that this feature can vary depending on the publisher or platform:

The McClay Library holds copies of all Queen's University PhD theses

A number of recent QUB PhD theses can be accessed online via the Queen's Research Portal. Please note that not all theses include the full-text (e.g. where an embargo has been applied).

Older QUB theses are held by the library in hard copy format, and are kept in the store. You can search for hard copy theses in Library Search: search for a topic, then filter your search results by Resource Type: Dissertations and by Availability: Physical holdings > McClay Library.  You will then see a list of hard copy theses held by the Library:

Theses filters example

If you would like to consult a thesis, you can use the Request button in the thesis record (you need to be signed in to Library Search). Theses may not be borrowed, but can be read in the library.  You will be notified when the thesis is ready to collect:

Place thesis request

Please note: the Library does not collect QUB undergraduate and masters dissertations. Please contact the relevant School if you are trying to locate one.

If the Library does not hold the book or article you require, you may be able to request it via Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Staff and postgraduate research students can complete the ILL request form and the Library will source it from another institution.

For more information, please visit our Interlibrary Loans page.

1. Saving results to Favourites: Each record in Library Search has a pin icon. As long as you have signed in with your QUB username and password, you can use this pin icon to save results to 'My Favorites'.

You can then review saved results by clicking on the My Favorites icon in the top right corner of the screen:
