Open Access: Gold Open Access Funding

This guide is intended to provide advice on open access to researchers

What is gold open access?

Gold open access means that the published version of the research article is open access directly from the journalthe reader does not need to pay to read the article.

The drawback to gold open access publishing is that some (not all) journals require that the author pay an article processing charge (APC). For open access journals, this APC helps to cover the journal’s costs and ensures that the content remains free to readers.

Other journals have a ‘hybrid’ model where some articles are open access while the remainder of articles in the journal are closed and available only to paid subscribers. These journals always require that an APC be paid before the article can be made open access.

Please note the RCUK Open Access Block Grant has been restricted to fully open access journals only.

For more information please see our blog post

RCUK Open Access Block Grant

The Research Councils UK (RCUK) has given the University a block grant to support the cost of gold open access. Research Councils UK (RCUK) represent the AHRC, BBSRC, EPSRC, ESRC, MRC, NERC and STFC.

You should contact openaccess@qub.ac.uk before submission to ensure there are sufficient funds to cover the cost of your article processing charge (APC).

You must publish any research papers arising from your research award in such a way that they fully meet your funder's requirements.

If your journal provides immediate and unrestricted access to the final published version of the paper with a CC-BY licence please download and complete the application form and return to openaccess@qub.ac.uk.
