Open Access: Introduction

This guide is intended to provide advice on open access to researchers

WHAT IS OPEN ACCESS?

open access

Open access (OA) is about achieving free access to research. OA research is digital, online, free of charge, and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions.

The two main routes to Open Access are known as Green and Gold.

Green open access means publishing in a journal and depositing the author accepted manuscript in a subject or institutional repository. Queen's Research Publications and Copyright Policy will allow Queen's authors to make their accepted manuscripts open access upon publication.

Gold open access means that the published version of the research article is open access directly from the journal - the reader does not need to pay to read the article.
