JSTOR’s AI research tool uses GPT-4o-mini from OpenAI and the open source all-MiniLM-L6-v2 sentence transformer model LLMs and Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG). It allows Natural Language Search and searches JSTOR content including journals articles, book chapters and research reports. It ensures accuracy by employing subject matter expert reviews, user feedback via qualitative research with students, faculty and librarians and applying industry standard metrics for Machine Learning (ML), Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Large Language Mode (LLM).
JSTOR AI Research Tool will display when you are successfully authenticated with your Queen's University Belfast credentials to a JSTOR resource. Using the relevant library link for the JSTOR resource on Databases A-Z or Library Search will ensure you are properly authenticated. You must also create a personal account on JSTOR with your QUB email address for JSTOR AI Research Tool to display. When results are retrieved from your search on JSTOR, click on record to view the full text and AI Research Tool will appear adjacent to the document if AI Research Tool feature is available for that content. JSTOR AI Research Tool explains how search terms relates to full text document. You can choose one of the prompt questions or ask your own question in the chat box. The tool provides information based on the content of the document only and does not retrieve wider content from JSTOR or other sites. JSTOR AI Research Tool is not available for the selected content, you will see the message 'Research tool not available. This content is not supported by the research tool.'
You can switch off JSTOR AI Research Tool when you are logged into your JSTOR personal account using the ON/OFF toggle.
You can highlight text within the full text document which will activate JSTOR AI Research Tool feature, select 'What is this selection about?' or 'Find related content' beside the sparkles icon to generate a summary or to search for additional material. You can keep a record of your conversation with JSTOR AI Research Tool by clicking on the three dot overflow menu to download the interaction as PDF or HTML. You can use Cite Research Tool which auto generates a citation. Download your conversation before leaving the item page as conversations are not retained beyond 3 hour period.
