EndNote is a desktop application that can be installed on a personal device. EndNote guide provides further detail on installing and using EndNote. EndNote 2025 includes new AI features Research Assistant, Find a Journal (FaJ) and Cite from PDF.
Please note: you must always consult your School, module instructor or supervisor's guidelines on the use of AI as some courses may restrict or prohibit the use of generative AI in academic work. QUB Position on AI offers University guidance for staff and students.
Research Assistant is a generative AI tool that auto-creates concise key takeaways when viewing a reference on EndNote. If Research Assistant is available for a reference click on the sparkles icon to generate the auto-summary of critical insights from articles and PDFs. The key takeaways summary is displayed in the Summary Panel on the right side of EndNote interface.
Find a Journal (FaJ) feature is powered by machine learning and integrated with Cite While You Write (CWYW) plugin. It is available in EndNote 2025 for Google Docs and Word Online CWYW only. It suggests suitable journals based on your manuscript metadata. It is not available for Word Desktop CWYW plugin.
Cite from PDF allows you to highlight quotes from PDFs which will automatically insert the quote and corresponding citation into your Word document. Place your cursor where you want to insert the quote and citation in your Word document. Locate the reference on EndNote you want to insert into your document. Navigate to PDF tab and click Open the reference in new window. When PDF displays in separate window highlight the required text and click the quotation mark icon.
The highlighted text and corresponding citation will be inserted into your Word document. The citation will be formatted in your selected style on EndNote.
