Borrowing

Borrowing
  • As an associate member you may borrow books from the unrestricted collections of any branch of Queen’s University Library.(Up to 10 books for a personal member or up to 15 books for a corporate member.)
  • Short-loan books are not available to borrow by associates but may be consulted in the short-loan section of the library.
  • Fines are payable if books are not returned or renewed on time.
  • If you have borrowed standard loan items, you will receive an email notification about automatic renewals. Associate members will also receive overdues, recalls, reminders and other messages in the email account you registered with.
  • All books are subject to recall at any time if requested by another reader. The normal loan period is one month unless requested by another reader i.e. ‘recalled’.
  • If a book you have on loan is recalled, you will be contacted by email and given a date by which you must return it.  Recalled books are subject to a higher rate of fine if not returned by the date notified in the recall email.
  • Your library record/account is deemed to be in default when you have overdue books and/or outstanding fines.

Printing and Photocopying

Printing and photocopying are available for a fee using your library smartcard (library card).  Funds can be loaded on to your library card online by logging into your PaperCut account.

If your membership is due to expire, please ensure any balance on your library card is used before the expiry date as it cannot be refunded.

How to add funds to your library smart card online through PaperCut:
  • login to your library account on the library website through PaperCut
  • look for 'Add Credit (WorldPay)'
  • this will bring you to a new page to add funds using your Debit/Credit Card via the secure WorldPay facility
  • choose the amount you wish to add to your card and follow the on screen payment instructions

Printing or photocopying costs 5p per page for black and white, or 20p per page for colour.

NB: make sure to choose the black and white option if collecting your printing from a colour machine.

QUB E-resources and QUB WIFI

Access to e-resources

Associate Membership does not include off campus access to electronic resources. There is access to a limited number of electronic resources and E-books when on campus. Some Queen’s collections are restricted to members of Queen’s University only.  This access is defined by the licences negotiated with the providers and does not include the use of Library electronic resources for commercial purposes.

Associate membership of the Library does not include off campus access to any electronic resources because our licences specify that this facility is available only to current staff and students of the university.

QUB WIFI

There are a number of ways to connect to WiFi at Queen's (see below)

  1. Select  _QUB_WiFi from the list of available networks on your device
  2. Enter your associate membership number and password - you may be asked to trust or accept a certificate (please do so if prompted)
  3. Open Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Safari, browse to www.qub.ac.uk and complete your sign on

Queen’s WiFi supports Windows, OSX (snow leopard and above), iOS, Android and Kindle.  If you are unable to connect to the WiFi service, please visit the IT Service Desk located on the ground floor in The McClay Library.

Online management of your Library Account

Online management of renewals, loans, fines/charges

As an associate member you are provided with a unique username and password to use with your library smart card.  These details can be used to log in to your library account online – from home or while in the library.  Keeping a check on your library account can help save you time and money.  The login details cannot be shared with anyone else.

Once logged in to My Account you can:

  • See details of the books that you have out on loan
  • Check the date/s that books are due back to the library
  • Pay fines - if you have accumulated fines on your library account, just click on the Pay Now link and you will be re-directed to a secure online payment screen.

NB: Users who are in default will, after a third overdue warning, have their library account suspended. The suspension will prevent the user from borrowing, renewing or requesting material and from using the Library.

The Library reserves the right to refuse membership to an associate who has previously been in default with the Library.
