Associate Membership Scheme: Library services

Library services available to all Associate Members

  • Borrowing (this does not include the short-loan collection)
  • Online management of renewals, loans, fines/charges through Queen's Online (QOL)
  • On campus access to a limited selection of electronic resources (licence dependent). There is no off campus access to electronic resources.
  • Printing and copying using your library smart card (fees apply)
  • Access to QUB WiFi
  • Inter Library Loans (fee applicable for each ILL, payable on receipt of the item). Please note that we do not supply ILLs for commercial purposes.

  • As an associate member you may borrow books from the unrestricted collections of any branch of Queen’s University Library.(Up to 10 books for a personal member or up to 15 books for a corporate member.)

  • Short-loan books are not available to borrow by associates but may be consulted in the short-loan section of the library.

  • Fines are payable if books are not returned or renewed on time.

The normal loan period is one month at which time you can renew the books unless requested by another reader i.e. ‘recalled’. You can login to your account online to renew books unless the book has been recalled.

  • All books are subject to recall at any time if requested by another reader.

  • If a book you have on loan is recalled, you will be contacted by email and given a date by which you must return it.  Recalled books are subject to a higher rate of fine if not returned by the date notified in the recall email.

  • Your library record/account is deemed to be in default when you have overdue books and/or outstanding fines.

Printing and Photocopying

Printing and photocopying are available for a fee using your library smart card.  Money can be loaded on to your card at any of the cash uploader machines in the library.  See below for more information.  Once you credit your smart card, it can also be used to purchase food and drink in the restaurants and cafés on the QUB campus.

Cost of printing/photocopying

Printing or photocopying costs 5p per page for black and white, or 20p per page for colour.

NB: make sure to choose the black and white option if collecting your printing from a colour machine.

How to add money to your card at the cash uploader machine:
  • insert your card
  • insert your money
  • once the money has loaded on to your card, press STOP and remove the card

The cash uploaders accept £1 coins, £2 coins or bank notes. They do not give out change.  If you use the cash uploader, it will instantly upload the money on to your card and you can print/copy immediately.

Please note, as an associate, you can only add funds to your card via the cash uploader machines as there is currently no facility to add funds to your associate smart card online.

Locations of the cash uploader machines:
  • McClay Library - in all of the print rooms
  • Medical Library - located near the student computing area in the library
  • Biomedical Library - in the small study area behind the library office

QUB E-resources and QUB WIFI

Access to e-resources

Associate Membership does not include off campus access to electronic resources. There is access to a limited number of electronic resources when on campus. Some Queen’s collections are restricted to members of Queen’s University only.  This access is defined by the licences negotiated with the providers and does not include the use of Library electronic resources for commercial purposes.

Associate membership of the Library does not include off campus access to any electronic resources because our licences specify that this facility is available only to current staff and students of the university.

There are a number of ways to connect to WiFi at Queen's (see below)

  1. Select  _QUB_WiFi from the list of available networks on your device
  2. Enter your associate membership number and password - you may be asked to trust or accept a certificate (please do so if prompted)
  3. Open Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Safari, browse to and complete your sign on

Queen’s WiFi supports Windows, OSX (snow leopard and above), iOS, Android and Kindle.  If you are unable to connect to the WiFi service, please visit the IT Service Desk located on the ground floor in The McClay Library.

Online management of your Library Account

Online management of renewals, loans, fines/charges

As an associate member you are provided with a unique username and password to use with your library smart card.  These details can be used to log in to your library account online – from home or while in the library.  Keeping a check on your library account can help save you time and money.  The login details cannot be shared with anyone else.

Once logged in you can:

  • See details of the books that you have out on loan
  • Check the date/s that books are due back to the library
  • Renew your book/s by clicking on the link (NB: books that are already past their return due date or that have been requested/recalled by another library user, cannot be renewed online and must be returned to the Library as soon as possible).
  • Pay fines - if you have accumulated fines on your library account, just click on the Pay Now link and you will be re-directed to a secure online payment screen.

NB: Users who are in default will, after a third overdue warning, have their library account suspended. The suspension will prevent the user from borrowing, renewing or requesting material and from using the Library.

The Library reserves the right to refuse membership to an associate who has previously been in default with the Library.
