Associate Membership Scheme: What is Associate Membership

Queen’s University Library primarily provides support for current staff and students of the University.  However, a membership scheme has been set up to enable members of the general public to get access to material not easily available elsewhere. Applicants should be at least 18 years old.  This scheme is monitored to ensure membership numbers are kept at a viable level and library policies and regulations are adhered to. Information on how to become a member can be found here. Associate Membership includes access to the various branches of the Library at QUB.

Associate Membership does not include off-campus access to electronic resources.  There is limited Library access to electronic resources on-campus and this access is defined by the licences negotiated with the providers.  It does not include the use of Library electronic resources for commercial purposes.

There are two categories of membership:

• Associate Personal for members using the Library for educational purposes only.

• Associate Corporate for members using the Library in connection with their profession or business.  Corporate membership is taken out in the name of the business who supply details of the employee who is authorised to use the library card. Additional cards can be taken out, at a reduced fee, for other named employees of the business.  

• Associate Charity for Registered Charities. This is the same as Corporate membership, detailed above, but the first card is given at a reduced rate.

Library associate membership is offered on a renewable 12 month subscription basis. 

Applicants must complete an online application form and make their membership payment online.

Membership runs for one year from the date of joining. The membership year starts from the date of application and members will receive notification from the Associate Membership team when their membership is due for renewal. Associate membership includes:

• Borrowing from the unrestricted collections (does not include borrowing of short-loan materials)
• Online management of renewals, loans, fines/charges through Queen's Online (QOL)
• Printing and copying using your library smart card (fees apply)
• On campus access to a limited selection of electronic resources including E-books (licence dependent). Library electronic resources may only be used for private and non-commercial research. There is no off campus access to electronic resources.
• Access to QUB WiFi
• Inter Library Loans (fee applicable for each ILL, payable on receipt of the item).
• Please note that we do not supply ILLs for commercial purposes.
